Dib sighed as the gym teacher droned on and on. Whatever she said didn't matter anyway; Dib didn't give a shit about his health, let alone want to improve it. To pass the time, he opened to a random page in his notebook and doodled a picture of a decapitated Zim.
".......and for this unit, we will be doing ballroom dancing with assigned partners."
He lifted his head, surprised. 'Ballroom dancing? Yuck! I wonder who my partner will be?' He thought, shaking his head. The teacher went on to list who was pared up with who.
"Dib and Tak....Zim and Gaz....."
Dib sighed again; oh well, Tak wasn't that bad. Besides the fact that she hated his guts.
Meanwhile, Zim was trying hard not to throw up. The Dib-human's sister? He didn't want anything to do with her. Gaz was having similar thoughts. She stood up and went over to the teacher, with Tak close behind.
"I don't mean any disrespect. But I can't have Zim as a partner. I don't want that thing touching me."
"I'm sorry, Gaz, but we don't have any other boys we could pair you up with."
Tak took the opportunity to butt into the conversation. "Please," She said quietly, "May Gaz be my partner, and Dib could pair with Zim? I....Gaz is my friend. She won't mind."
"Good idea, Tak. Yes, I would like to have Tak as my partner."
The teacher hesitated, then sighed. "Fine. Tell Zim and Dib to get over here."
"Yes!" Said Gaz, giving Tak a high-five. Dib and Zim walked over, hands in pockets.
"Zim, Dib, there's been a change of plans."
Zim shifted about uncomfortably. "And what change of plans has been made, miss human-monster?"
"You and Dib are going to be partners now."
"WHAT?!?!" The two said, flabbergasted.
"Me?!?! With the Dib-human?!?! Are you out of your mind?!?"
"You have got to be kidding me!"
"I'm sorry, but Tak and Gaz wanted to be partners. It's just a school assignment. It's really not that big of a deal."
The teacher then turned and left the two boys standing there, mouths hanging open. Zim was the first to recover.
"Okay, human, I will let you do this.......dancing thingy with me, but don't try anything, or I will be wearing that big head of yours as a belt buckle."
Dib ignored him, shaking his head; how could this day get any worse?
                                                  . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Zim mumbled angrily to himself. How dare that pest brush him off like that? Zim is not one to brush off! Still grumbling, he grabbed all of his stuff, ready to go to math, his last class of the day. He rushed into the bathroom, opening up a stall and sinking to the ground with a sigh. He lifted his wig from his head and patted the reddish skin where it had been rubbing. Why should he, Zim, the almighty Irken invader, have to wear something so uncomfortable? It was ridiculous.
Sighing again, he got off the floor and unlocked the door, already late. 'Oh, goody. Bring more attention to myself.' He thought bitterly as he stepped out into the hallway. There was a big glob of football players in a corner, laughing. He wondered what was going on, and then decided he would go check it out. Looking around people's legs, he saw Dib getting punched in the face, blood running from his nose. Before he could think about it, he jumped in front of the boy, arms spread wide, with a loud shout of "No!", just a fist made contact with his face.
Zim spat a mouthful of blue blood on the ground and hissed in a way Dib found very threatening.
"Leave.....him......alone."
"Why should we?" Smirked on of them, who looked like the ring leader.
Zim spoke in a hostile, low voice, full of warning.
"Just turn around and walk away before I kick your asses. Leave Dib alone."
"The ring leader just grinned, advancing on the smaller one. "No."
"I'm warning you."
"No."
"Okay, you asked for this."
Suddenly rushing forward, the alien leaped onto the bigger one, sinking his teeth and fingers into his arm. The boy screamed and tried to shake him off, only making the green boy's hold on him tighten. Zim kicked his feet into the larger boy's stomach. Other boys tried to pull him off, but he held strong. After clinging on for a good while longer, he let go and leaped to the ground, smiling triumphantly. The football players panicked and ran away.
Zim held a hand out for Dib, who had sat down on the floor. Dib grabbed it and stood up, and a few moments of silence before he said quietly, "I didn't need your help." Zim's grin disappeared completely before he turned around, hurt, and hissed, "Fine, next time I'll just stand there and watch you get ground to a pulp!" And took off in the other direction.
Dib watched him leave and was already swallowed up by guilt; he didn't mean to hurt the other's feelings. Quickly, he followed after the other, and jumped on him to keep him from running away again. Zim struggled underneath him, shouting "Let me go!" as tears ran down his face. Dib rolled him around, sort of, so that the alien was looking right at him. Zim couldn't move, his arms were pinned to his sides, he couldn't even wipe away the bright pink tears that were showing so plainly to his enemy.
Dib let go of the alien's arms with a sigh, and got up, giving his enemy an open opportunity to slip away. But instead of taking off, he just stood there, crying silently. Dib hesitantly walked over to him and wrapped his arms around him, trapping the small alien in a tight hug. Zim buried his face into his shoulder.
"Zim....I'm sorry.....I really did need your help....."
"That's not why I'm crying, Dib."
"Why are you crying?"
"I didn't want to lose you."
Dib hugged him tighter, enjoying how the boy's heat felt on his skin, and tilted the shorter one's head up.
"Zim.....I love you..."
"Zim....loves you too...."
Zim forcefully brought his lips on the human's, wrapping his long tongue around Dib's shorter one. Dib sighed and kissed him back, backing him up against the wall. Zim's fingernails burrowed into Dib's shirt and pulled him closer to him.
Then Dib broke the kiss, backing off. Zim whined, wanting to be kissed again, but Dib had turned and ran from him. Wiping tears from his face, the green boy left for his house, despite the fact he still had 40 minutes of math to get to.
                               . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

The next day, all Zim could do was steal glances at Dib. His feelings muddled up in his chest. Confusion, wondering why the boy had run away from him, curiosity, wondering what the human smelled like (?), and an overwhelming desire to be kissed and held again.
Plus, he had looked into "dancing", and discovered it meant that he would get to be in Dib's arms again. Zim smiled at the thought; it was so warm and safe and sweet when Dib had held him like that. He was looking forward to gym today.
And so was another girl in the class as well; Tak couldn't wait to pull Gaz into her arms, feel her warmth and curves against her body. She was desperately in love with the girl. Dancing might be the only way to show Gaz how she felt.
                                           . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Gym.
Finally.
Two different Irkens had been waiting all day for this.
Zim pulled on his gym clothes with haste, running out of the locker room. The students did their warm-ups, and then at last Zim got to see Dib again. He rushed into the boy's arms, hugging him tightly, and followed the teacher' instructions. Dib swung him around in circles, surprising himself at how good he was at this.
"Zim....I-I'm sorry for running off yesterday......"
"It's okay, Dib, just keep holding me like this."
Meanwhile, Tak also spun Gaz around, having cheated and downloading how to dance videos into her Pak.
"Tak, your really good at this."
"Thanks."
"Um....I've been meaning to talk to you about something...."
"What's that?" She asked, heart pounding.
"Well, I really like having you as a friend...."
"....and?"
"I-I-I think....your very cute...."
"You do?"
"Yeah, and I wanted to ask....if you would like to be my girlfriend."
Tak stopped dancing and hugged her tightly.
"Oh, Gaz, I thought you would never ask."
Two Irkens got what they wanted that day, and so did two humans.
